We all love to watch people on TV doing insanely crazy things, with most of us quite happy to allow such madness to be performed by others. But do you ever watch those types of things and sit back and wonder what drives those folks to do such crazy things ()? What we look at as being nothing more than an incredibly dangerous stunt is to them just one in a long line of crazy adventures that fill their need for adrenaline. There are moments in history that have changed the world in ways that we don’t really realize, and then there are those that simply qualify as just plain nuts. Let’s take a look at some of the most famous of these, after which you can decide if it was a wacky stunt or a crazy adventure. 1. First man in space – We all tale space flight somewhat for granted nowadays, but spare a thought for Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin who became the first man in space. You wonder just what he must have been thinking when he set foot inside a big metal rocket that probably seemed more likely to explode into pieces than make it to space. Make it he did though, and now that crazy adventure is one of the most historic moments in history. 2. Over the falls in a barrel – Water slides are a ton of fun, but that’s not exactly what comes to mind when you stand by Niagara Falls. The sheer power of the water is enough to make you take a few steps backwards, yet in 1901 Annie Edson Taylor decided to try the water slide route by going over the falls in a barrel. She was lucky to survive, but not all of the copycats who followed enjoyed the same success. 3. Snake River Canyon Jump – Miss Taylor may have been daring when she hit Niagara Falls in a barrel, but even she wouldn’t think of leaping the Snake River Canyon in a rocket car. That was the brainchild of stuntman Evel Knievel who ended up failing in rather dramatic fashion as his stunt cycle drifted to the bottom of the canyon. 4. English Channel swim – The completion of the Channel Tunnel has made it easy for travelers to get from the UK to France in no time at all. That would have saved Matthew Webb a tone of time as it took him almost 22 hours to swim across the Channel in 1875. 5. Sailing around the world – Most teenagers have a difficult time getting out of bed to start their day, but not so Jessica Watson who became the youngest person to ever sail solo around the world. She did so in 2010 at the tender age of 16. 6. Climbing Everest – Mount Everest casts an imposing shadow across the landscape and its dizzying height made it the ultimate challenge for climbers from all over the world. Nine groups attempted to reach the top before the summit was finally reached by Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay in 1953. 7. Race for the South Pole – Back in 1912, a pair of expeditions set off in an attempt to become the first to reach the South Pole. When Robert Scott and his British team arrived they were stunned to find that they had been beaten by Roald Amundsen’s Norwegian group. It became even more tragic for the 5 man British team as none of them made it back from their ill-fated trip. 8. A Titanic adventure – The Titanic is one of the most legendary ships to have ever set sail, despite the fact it never completed its maiden voyage. That led to many expeditions hitting the water in search of the sunken ship. It took almost 75 years for her to be finally discovered by Bob Ballard and his team of intrepid explorers. 9. Taking flight – Airplane travel was still very much in its infancy back in 1927,but that didn’t stop Charles Lindbergh from attempting and completing a solo, non-stop flight from New York to Paris. People thought him mad to attempt the 3,600 km flight, but he pulled it off aboard his now legendary aircraft The Spirit Of St. Louis. 10. Deep sea diving – In a strange twist of irony, James Cameron, the man behind the Titanic movie, recently went on a crazy adventure of his own to explore the Mariana Trench. Knows as the deepest part of the ocean, Cameron became the first man to reach the 6.8 mile deep trench floor.
